May 21, 2015: Greening Your Value Chain: Safer Chemicals, Materials and Products
What is Your Chemical Footprint? Creating Shared Value for Company, Customers and Community
Speaker: Roger McFadden, Vice President, Senior Scientist, Staples Inc. - World Bank
ISM-NVA Members appreciated the great talk by Staples' Senior Scientist Roger McFadden on sustainability and "Greening The Supply Chain for Company, Customers, and Community".  Roger's presentation at World Bank on May 28th addressed how organizations are making an orderly transition to innovative, safer, and more sustainable products.  Hazardous chemicals can impose heavy burdens on workers, communities and the environment in the form of health care costs, lost productivity, and decreased quality of life — similar to many of the impacts of climate change. A recent report from the United Nations Environment Program documented hundreds of millions dollars of costs companies can incur due to toxic chemicals in products and supply chains.   Roger's presentation addressed how organizations are making an orderly transition to innovative, safer and more sustainable products.  Shown in the picture at left are some of those who attended the monthly meeting and stayed to thank Roger McFadden, including Karen Austin, Irene Marnell, Roger McFadden, Marlena Salgado-Felix, Tim Davis, and MIke Bridges.

October 21, 2014 Speaker Event:  Port Congestion - Are The Products You Ordered Going to Arrive on Time?
Robert Bouchard (Director, Office of Infrastructure Development and Congestion Mitigation for the Maritime Administration (MARAD), U.S. Department of Transportation) provided a fascinating presentation on the current state of US ports and efforts that have been taken/are underway to alleviate the congestion facing many of these vital entrance points to the US.  There are more than 300 ports in the United States, and they are all different. Ports may be operated by a state, a county, a municipality, a private corporation, or a combination. Many ports are complex entities, involving facilities for transportation by several modes of transportation: water, rail, road, or even air.  As supply chain professionals, we know how this can impact delivery of the goods we purchase for our companies.

Picture
On March 14th, ISM-NVA hosted an event at the Lunder Conservation Center which is located at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.  The Center is responsible for the preservation and restoration of artwork for both the American Art Museum and the Portrait Gallery.  Attendees had the opportunity to tour the facility, talk with conservators and learn about the supply chain management of the various materials that are used during the restoration process.  It was interesting to learn that science, art history and hands on experience are the essential skill sets required of an art conservator.  Comments from attendees included “This was a lot of fun” and  “Great change of pace!  Good to do something new and different.  Gives new perspectives on how far reaching the field extends!”

We would like to schedule this type of event periodically to our members in the future.  Please contact the Director, Programs if you know of a venue that would be of interest to the affiliate.
